Why Tracking Macros is Overrated
...and why I built Alma: the personalized nutrition coach in your pocket.
G'day Legend,
This one is special for me. I started my career creating cookbooks, content, and resources to simplify the complex world of nutrition — making it digestible (pun intended). My dream has always been to do it at scale, but also make it personalized.
After years of working with athletes and teams, I’ve finally unlocked the solution I’ve always wanted to build… and today, I get to share it with you.
In this week’s Newsletter (4 min read):
📊 Why tracking macros only gives you half the picture
🧩 The missing link in most nutrition apps
🚀 My announcement: launching Alma, the future of personalized nutrition
If your training buddy still believes macros are the whole game, send them THIS link — it might change how they fuel forever.
📊 Why Tracking Macros Isn’t Enough
A few months ago, I wrote about Think vs. Feel when it comes to nutrition.
Think = numbers and data — useful for establishing a baseline but often rigid and joyless.
Feel = listening to your body — great for long-term adherence but lacks the quantitative backbone to know where you stand.
The best approach is a balance of both.
But here’s the thing: tracking macros has serious limits.
It only focuses on half the battle — leaving out micronutrients like iron, zinc, and B12 that are essential for health and performance.
It’s cumbersome and exhausting — typing out every meal or scanning labels turns eating into homework.
It doesn’t teach you how to improve — it tells you the score but never coaches you to win the game.
In short: macros are a starting point, not the full story.
🧩 The Missing Piece: Micronutrients
Imagine hitting your protein goal but still feeling sluggish because you’re low on B12… or constantly run down because your iron is off.
That’s where micronutrients come in — the often-overlooked drivers of energy, performance, and longevity. Without tracking them, you’re flying blind.
Here’s what frustrated me for years:
Every product out there just tracks. None of them actually helps.
I wanted something smarter. Something that doesn’t just keep score, but tells you exactly what to do to get better.
🚀 Introducing Alma
Over the past 10 months, I’ve been working with an incredible team to build Alma, a personalized nutrition experience that takes everything I’ve learned as a performance chef and combines it with cutting-edge tech.
Alma doesn’t just track your macros — it maps your micronutrient intake, identifies gaps, and gives you daily, actionable guidance.
Missed your fiber goal today? Alma will tell you exactly what to eat to fix it. (Did you know low fiber intake is linked to some of the leading causes of mortality?)
Training for a HYROX event or marathon? Alma will tailor your plan to you, not a generic template.
Prefer voice input over logging meals? Just tell Alma what you ate — no photos or typing required (though you can do that too).
And it gets smarter over time. The more data you share, the more dialed-in your plan becomes.
💬 Cool Feature Alert: Ask Alma
We’ve just unlocked Ask Alma — a feature where you can ask questions like:
“What am I low on right now?”
“How do I hit my iron target today?”
Alma will instantly answer and guide you in real time.
Soon, we’ll roll out meal plans and one-stop grocery ordering, so your Sunday night prep can be effortless.
