Think vs. Feel: The Nutrition Principle You Need to Know

Why Noah Olsen Eats 3,200 Calories & What I’d Change

Gday mate!

I’ve talked before about meal timing as a major factor in eating for performance. After training and hanging out with Noah Ohlsen, I wanted to share some key takeaways about his eating strategy—and what I’ll share here is NOT in the YouTube video from the weekend.

What This Week’s Athlete Eats in a Day

Let’s start with training.

Noah, an 11 time crossfit games athlete, reaching the podium twice, typically trains between 10 AM and 3 PM. He never used to eat much before working out, but recently, he’s been having some simple oats beforehand. (He now knows about the Power Bowl and is pretty much game on!) This gives him the fuel he needs to power through his latest workouts. At the moment he is consuming around 3200 calories, which I admitted to him sounded a bit low, but the following passage can explain...

My principle of ‘Think vs Feel’ state

Noah isn’t in a strict routine right now—he cycles in and out based on the time of year, which is key for long-term success. Staying too rigid can harm your relationship with food and limit adaptability.

He’s in what I call a ‘feel’ state—a contrast to a ‘think’ state, where we meticulously track food intake. Think mode helps when resetting or building structure, but feel mode removes the mental math, making eating more intuitive and sustainable. The key? Finding balance between the two and self-correcting if you lean too far in either direction

That said, training 3–4 times a day means he needs simple, fast-digesting foods to stay fueled. (And as you know—RULE #3 of Eating Like a Legend: minimize fat around workouts!)

What would I tweak? Adding easy-to-digest snacks like fruit, purees, or shakes between sessions—but again, it’s about what works for him.

The Most Impressive Thing About Noah

Noah’s biggest strength? His intentionality with his wife, Joann. I’ve always said—you learn a lot about someone by how they talk about and prioritize their partner, and Noah sets the bar high.

At night, he shuts off work to have dinner with her—a habit that likely boosts oxytocin, reducing stress and even improving digestion by keeping the body in a rest-and-digest state.

So beyond performance, his routine has real physiological benefits too—intentional eating + meaningful connection is a game-changer and a huge neglect not only for athletes, but every day legends too. By being present you allow more effective opportunities for your digestion to do its thing, which in turn means more nutrition, and better recovery… pro tip, no phone at the dinner table and tell the work team you are in eating mode.

What’s your biggest takeaway from Noah’s eating habits? Reply and let me know!

👊 Keep fueling like a legend!

Is Frozen or Fresh Veg Better?

If you are looking to make some budget friendly meals I wanted to lay out the fundamentals to help you with your decision. When it comes to cost, nutrition, and convenience, frozen veggies hold their own against fresh.

  • Nutrient game? Frozen gets flash-frozen at peak ripeness, so you’re still getting the good stuff—sometimes even more nutrients than fresh, which loses some over time (some B vitamins can get diluted)

  • Cost? Frozen is easier on the wallet, lasts longer, and cuts down on food waste (no more sad, wilted spinach at the back of the fridge).

  • Convenience? Pre-washed, pre-chopped, and ready to go—perfect when you need to throw something together fast.

  • Fresh still wins on taste and texture, but you gotta use it before it turns.
